What to Put at the End of a Bed

What to put at the end of a bed? That is the question. First off, I think the trick is making sure to use something with the right scale. I've seen photos before that have massively tall couches at the foot of the bed, and to me, that overwhelms the bed a little too much. I tend to like things that are a little lower or about level with the bed. Second tip: the more functional, the better! Instead of just setting something there to fill the space, think of what would be useful to have there. Storage for extra blankets? A seat to put on your shoes in the morning?

Here's some inspiration of rooms that have done a fantastic job of using this space!

A pair of garden stools

A large vintage trunk
{and how sweet are those doggy silhouettes above the bed?)

Stacked luggage & trunk

A whole living space

Console table and an ottoman

Two ottomans (love that yellow ikat print!)

A tufted velvet settee-oh my.
You know how I love velvet.

Or even just a set of built-in drawers?

{Notice how this is the 3rd Sarah Richardson pic in a row. One of my favorite designers for sure! She knows how it's done. There will no doubt be a future post devoted to Sarah Richardson's brilliant designs!}

Now that I think about it, there's actually nothing at the end of my bed right now besides my school bag. But then again, my bed at school is a twin and is pushed against the wall to save space. I bet a little stool would be cute there..hmm. Maybe I'll be looking for one of those :)

What's at the end of YOUR bed?

I love that huge trunk! And the velvet settee. Sometimes I have a bench at the end of my bed. It used to be upholstered, but a few months ago, I ripped the cushion off, and put the bench under my dresser...I was tired of bending over to reach the bottom drawers ;-) I haven't decided yet whether I like it or not. It definitely looks weird, but I do want to add legs to the dresser soon.

Hi Courtney,
Right now there is...sadly, nothing. It's the walkway between bed end and dresser, no room. It is a fantastic space...I covet an end of bed space. I like the trunk idea and especially the yellow ottomans.
By the way Courtney, I love your blog. It's such an openhearted, refreshing place to fall into for a little design peaksie, it completely uplifts my day.
Your class trip to the tile place was a fantastic post. You're the bestest, thank you!

I too sadly have nothing at the end of mu bed other than the that if I put something there it would look too cramped in the walk way. Maybe in my next house.

This is a great post! And really neat blog :) I have been pining for a trunk to put at the foot of our bed for the longest time. It seems other things keep taking precedence. But one day!

Beautiful interiors! They're not even my usual style, but I still love them!

Agreed about something functional! We just moved our living room ottoman to the end of our bed. Right now, we're using it for non-stinky laundry (towels are elsewhere). So far, it's working really well!

Right now we don't have anything at the end of our bed, but I'd love a set of X benches!

Oh I love all these ideas! We seem to always have a full laundry basket at the end of our bed. Haha. I would love to have some kind of seat at the end of our bed though!

I have plans for a bench there... I have never thought of doing a console table for a taller bed! Love that idea!

Awesome pics and great ideas. But, help! I have a sleigh bed that unfortunately can't be replaced just yet. I can't seem to come up with anything that doesn't feel awkward at the end of our sleigh bed. Any ideas???

Hi Sonya!

I actually have a sleigh bed at my parents house and in the past I've had a low oval ottoman at the foot of my bed, and that seemed to work! However, right now I actually like it better with nothing at the foot of the bed! There are some nice wood details on the footboard that I wouldn't really want to cover up. But I do think that having a footboard on a sleigh bed makes it so you don't necessarily need anything there, if you can't find anything that works! I can definitely imagine some of these ideas looking nice with a sleigh bed though. If you'd like, feel free to email me a picture and maybe I'll have some more suggestions! :) courtneylaneblog@gmail.com
