I can't tell you how many episodes of House Hunters I've watched in my life. Too many. The more that I've watched, I'm gonna be honest...I get so annoyed with the people on it. I feel like I can pretty much predict everything they're going to say. "This room's a little tight...", "Hmm not so sure about the paint color..." (I always want to say, "But wait do you know that you can paint the walls?")
But the worst of the worst for me is when they obsess over having two things: Stainless steel appliances and granite countertops.
Why? I mean yes, I'm all for stainless steel. And granite is fine. But every time I hear someone say that the kitchen *needs* to have granite and stainless steel, I just wonder why that's a requirement to them. I found this picture today on Canadian House and Home, and initially just loved the cabinets, ceiling detail, and overall feel of the room. And then I noticed something.
WHITE. APPLIANCES. Gasp.
But wait, is that allowed? What would the House Hunters think of that? In this case, I honestly don't think they'd care, or at least they shouldn't because these white appliances look like a dream in this kitchen, do they not? I think the key in this space was having the cabinets painted just as bright white as the appliances.
Maybe I wouldn't normally choose white appliances over stainless steel, but after seeing this, maybe I actually would in some cases! If nothing else, it has been proven to me that there IS a way to make white appliances look beyond awesome in a space.
Here's a couple more inspiring kitchens that are sporting white appliances:

I could definitely live with white appliances in an all white kitchen! The third kitchen is my favorite.
Happy Thursday!
It was so funny to read your post today. I say the same thing, "Look at the HOUSE, not the cosmetics of the house." They get so caught up in "the master bedroom/bath is so small." You just got married, people. You have nothing!!! Anyway, I want stainless appliances when I redo my lakehouse kitchen, but guess what? I have a white farmhouse sink and that's staying - so what would they say about my kitchen-to-be? "Oh, nothing matches in here!!!" And the odds are we'll stay with white appliances 'cause they won't look as modern and I like a more cottage-y and vintage-y look... And they're cheaper, too!
I love this. So funny about those "standard requirements!" I absolutely love the white appliances in the last kitchen. There's an old farmhouse chic feeling that I just love!!! Those house hunter ppl have NO idea. You can always re-do and purchase whatever appliances you want. Everytime I think our house isn't the way I want it to be and start getting stressed about it,I just remember that some folks aren't even lucky enough to own a home!
I LOVE THIS! wow. just had to get that out there. the boyfriend and i are in a constant argument over this exact topic. stainless steel & granite.
my side of the fight: "it'll be a starter house! starter! how many people have granite in a starter home?! do you know how much extra is costs?!"
his side of the fight: "it'll keeps the value up. we live in the kitchen. well, correction, I live in the kitchen. so let me make it nice."
grrrr. men.
I would live with white appliances no questions asked, especially in those kitchens. Stainless steal gets so many finger prints and that drives me nuts. Appliances from here http://bigchill.com/site/ would be my dream.
I agree with you. A first house is exactly what that implies. It will not be perfect, but that is where the learning experiences come in, figuring out what your true preferences are, etc. Some of those shows I feel like I am watching reruns, even when it is different people.
One of the really fun things about getting older is watching all the fashions and trends come and go. What is MUST HAVE during one decade becomes passé the next. Kitchen appliances are no exception...I've lived through the harvest hues of the 70's and a big almond craze in the 80s. Black was a hit for a while, and I do recall some white in the 90s. It's true that stainless has been the reigning champ for quite some time, but nothing lasts forever. I have no doubt that someday we will look back and say, "Stainless?? What were we thinking?!"
When we had our kitchen re-done last year, I CHOSE white appliances! Shocking! My kitchen is white and small and I just loved the clean, seamless look of white. Thanks for htis!
Courtney THANK YOU for this post - I personally like the look of white over stainless steel but I've felt rather lonely in this preference up until now lol. It's great to see these photos with beautiful kitchens with white appliances. My husbands and I bought a white one when we had the choice between white and stainless steel for the same price - it had to do with it being a better brand and serving our needs better however I was surprised how much better I liked it in our kitchen compared to the stainless steel one we were replacing. I've heard that most big interior design trends tend to last for about 10 years, which makes me wonder what the next big trend in kitchen appliances will be. Ah, we'll just have to wait and see I guess. :)
I could definitely do white appliances. I don't necessarily think that stainless steel is always the right choice. Love all these rooms :)
So agree with you about the annoying House Hunter people!!! Actually I think granite counter tops are beginning to look dated already. I think classic materials like wood, soapstone and marble are the way to go---if you can afford it.
I totally agree!! Those options are much cleaner looking than granite to me, too.
I love my white appliances well do not want granite counter tops... so well you are my blog of my dreams today. Wow the Canadian House and Home picture is almost perfect for our home and being Canadian how apropos. I guess I have to change my wallpaper on my laptop now, gee thanks.
Wow im in love with all of those georgous kitchens! White is soo pretty! ..ps thanks for becoming a new follower : )

I go crazy when they say that on House Hunters. Seriously, just have someone install granite for you and order some stainless from Lowes... I want to tell them that its not the end of the world. I think white can be done right, like these photos... Although I always prefer stainless the white above makes the rooms look streamlined with the similar color extending the length across the cabinets / appliances.
I am remodeling my kitchen right now and chose to go with white appliances. I like the way it looks. And don't see the need to go with stainless steel just because.
We have a cottage style home in the south and I can't imagine how our kitchen would look without our white appliances.
White colored appliances are clean for vision but get dirty easily when smeared. Anyway, they are perfect to blend for white background.
What would the House Hunters think of that?

Wow, these are great pictures! I have to say I’m a convert now; I’m all for white appliances. I think they’re elegant and neat. Who cares about what those House Hunters might say? They won’t be the one cooking in your kitchen, anyway.
Sincerely,
